We figure that our recipe for chocolate peanut butter cup popcorn should appeal to just about everyone. After all, we’ve rarely encountered anyone who doesn’t like the combination of chocolate and peanut butter.
And we all know what peanut butter cups are, right? Those little molded milk chocolate cups stuffed with creamy peanut butter come in regular size and minis. Minis means we can eat more of them, yes? They’re actually the most popular candy in the U.S. and probably in our house, too.
Who remembers the slogan “two great tastes that taste great together?” Yup, that was the beginning, when Reese’s candy company created this amazing combo in 1928. The company is now owned by Hershey but it was actually a former Hershey employee who went out on his own at the time and created Reese’s in the 1920’s.
Although the milk chocolate and creamy peanut butter combo is the most popular, you can now find dark chocolate or white chocolate shells, crunchy peanut butter fillings and even almond butter and cashew butter fillings.
Reese’s peanut butter cups definitely continue to be the top sellers but there are new brands launching their own PB cups all the time. Our favorite? Whichever one happens to be near us when we have a craving! But we all know that our favorite cravable snack is popcorn and we get excited about all the many variations we can create. So, chocolate peanut butter cup popcorn was a no brainer.
We warmed up our favorite peanut butter and drizzled it over our freshly popped corn. Then we melted chocolate and poured it on as well. We tossed in roasted peanuts and then got a bag of mini peanut butter cups and cut them into quarters. Our method of adding the cups to the popcorn was – 3 quarter pieces into the mix, 1 quarter piece into our mouths. You can use whatever ratio works for you.
One other idea for your Chocolate Peanut Butter Cup Popcorn: Make a batch that’s big enough to give as gifts! Because this is such a popular recipe, we’ve found that it’s easy to double or triple the recipe, and then scoop a half-cup or so into snack bags, tie closed with a festive ribbon and hand out to kids and friends.
Spread this out on a sheet pan and let it firm up for a few. Then stand back so you won’t get trampled by friends and family running to grab it. Or maybe don’t even tell them about it. We’ll keep your secret.
Add the popped popcorn to a large bowl.
Warm the peanut butter for 30 seconds in the microwave and pour over the popcorn. Stir to coat.
Cut the mini peanut butter cups into quarters and stir into the popcorn.
Spread the popcorn out on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.
Melt the chocolate chips either in the microwave or in a bowl set over a pot of simmering water. Drizzle over the popcorn and sprinkle with a bit of sea salt. Allow to sit for about an hour to cool and set. Store any leftovers in an airtight container on the counter.
