This Lemon Drop Martini with Pink Grapefruit adds a twist to the classic lemon drop cocktail. It is one of our favorites because it is such a perfect blend of sweet and sour ingredients. It has a satisfying pucker that’s tempered by a sugared rim. And, with two ounces of vodka, it can be deceptively powerful. But what a refreshing sipper on a hot summer day.
Given our fondness for the original, should we tamper with it? Oh, definitely! We love to create variations of all our favorite drinks. And for as much as we appreciate lemon, we also have a soft spot for grapefruit in cocktails so we’ve created the pink grapefruit lemon drop. When pink grapefruit is in season, we can’t resist at all but we didn’t want to overload the sour flavor so we split the difference between the lemon and the pink grapefruit.
If you can’t find pink grapefruit or it it is out of season, regular grapefruit will work just fine. The difference between the two varieties is a higher level of beta carotene in the pink variety. Depending on the amount, the pulp can be a slightly orange color or a deep shade of pink. Pink grapefruit is also typically a touch sweeter than the regular variety but still has that strong, sour grapefruit taste.
For this version of the drink, we also added a special touch to the typical sugared rim. Our silver cocktail rim sugar is sparkling and festive and such a nice color play with the grapefruit. Can’t you just picture these beautiful drinks on a platter at a party?
Add the silver rim sugar to a shallow bowl. Run the edge of a cut lemon or grapefruit along the rim of a cocktail glass and dip into the sugar. Refrigerate for a couple of minutes to set. Note that you can also wet the rim with a little simple syrup instead of the citrus juice.
Add the 2 oz. of vodka, 1 oz. of triple sec (or Cointreau), 1 oz. of lemon juice, 1 oz. of simple syrup and 1 oz. of pink grapefruit juice to a cocktail shaker.
Fill the shaker with ice, shake well and pour into the prepared glass.
