Funfetti Popcorn

Funfetti Popcorn

Our recipe for funfetti popcorn combines the sweet with the crunch and the FUN! But what exactly is funfetti, other than fun? Pillsbury trademarked the word funfetti in 1989 as their name for multi-colored candy sprinkles. They then developed several products that incorporated those sprinkles such as cake mix and pre-made frosting. But in the 30 plus years since, plenty of other people have developed recipes using those brightly colored sprinkles (also called rainbow sprinkles, unicorn sprinkles or jimmies in the Northeast).

Social media photos helped make funfetti popular and it’s easy to see why because it’s hard to resist brightly colored sprinkles. They’re just a combination of sugar, shortening and food colors but they look like delicious fun.

These days we find funfetti sprinkles on all kinds of baked goods from cakes to cookies and, of course, as a topping for an ice cream cone. Pillsbury used their trademarked sprinkles in a cake mix but there are now plenty of from-scratch recipes as well. The cake itself is a moist yellow or white layer cake but the sprinkles are mixed into the batter and melt a bit during the baking which results in streaks of fun color throughout. No kid can resist it. We’re actually not sure adults can either.

Pillsbury’s trademark didn’t stop other baking brands from issuing their own copycat versions under different names. And, of course, the word funfetti itself is now synonymous with rainbow sprinkles.

If you’ve seen confetti sprinkles, by the way, and are wondering about the difference, it’s a matter of shape…and trademark. Confetti sprinkles are flat and circular whereas Pillsbury’s trademark funfetti are thin tube shapes.

So, with all this rainbow colored goodness available, was there any doubt that it should be included in popcorn? Nope, none at all. We love popcorn, we love sprinkles, we are all in on funfetti popcorn!

It’s a simple recipe that includes our delicious movie popcorn, some good melted white chocolate, a pinch of salt to balance the sugar and an extra large helping of funfetti sprinkles. OK, maybe two helpings because if you’re going to do a thing then do it properly. We stir to coat, spread it out to let it set and then serve. Our recipe includes a tip on how to store leftovers but, honestly, we’ve yet to encounter leftovers of this recipe.
