The cherry daiquiri cocktail is a fun and delicious twist on a classic drink. And its bright red hue, the result of the cherry preserves used to flavor it, makes it a great choice to celebrate Valentine’s Day.
Daiquiris, one of the six recognized classic cocktails, originated in Cuba and use rum, citrus, usually lime, and sweeteners as their main flavors. They are simple, delicious, incredibly strong and high adaptable.
One of the daiquiri’s most famous fans was writer Ernest Hemingway and he favored his with extra rum, both lime and grapefruit juice and some sweet maraschino liqueur. For our cherry version, we skipped the grapefruit but we’re totally with him on the maraschino liqueur and highly recommend it. It adds both sweetness and flavor but, in a pinch, simple syrup will do. And to balance out the sweetness, we serve ours in a glass rimmed with our Bright Pink Margarita Salt for an extra fun Valentine’s appeal.
Add a tablespoon or two of the margarita salt to a shallow dish. Brush the edges of two cocktail glasses with the corn or simple syrup and then roll them around in the salt.
Add the rum, fresh lime juice, cherry preserves and maraschino cherry liqueur or simple syrup to a cocktail shaker. Fill with ice, shake well and strain into the prepared cocktail glasses.
